We don’t release a new varietal every other week or month - so introducing our Cabernet Sauvignon to you is a little bit special for us.
What is it like on the palate? You can can expect all the classic traits of a Cab Sav - which means full-bodied and smooth with intense blackcurrant, blackberry and cedar flavours, complimented by a delicious blueberry aroma. In the glass it has that characteristic deep red colour, and like all our other alcohol removed wines, it contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume. In case you were wondering that equals zero standard drinks.
Cabernet Sauvignon facts Cab Sav is a well loved varietal, which is probably why it is the most planted wine grape in the world - followed closely by Merlot. Locally Cab Sav is only out-planted by Shiraz and Chardonnay - making it Australia’s third most planted wine grape variety. Depending on where you are in the world, expect your Cab Sav to taste a little different. New World versions from Australia, Chile and South Africa are often higher in alcohol (not ours of course) and are more intensely flavoured than Cabs from say France, which tend to be more floral. The Aussie Cab Sav you are drinking today can be traced back to 1832, when the first rootstock was introduced here from France, and the Barossa is home to some of the oldest productive Cab Sav vines around.
What food pairs well with Cabernet Sauvignon? Pairing wines with foods or particular dishes is something of an art - get it wrong and they can clash and you’ll end up enjoying neither. Cab Sav is a robust wine and is best enjoyed with similarly flavoured dishes - think a rare steak, ribs, meatballs, duck, venison, lamb, robust pasta dishes and roasted vegetables. Cheese is also the perfect partner for a glass or three of Cab Sav - where the full-bodied character pairs well with intense cheeses like gouda or an aged or smoked Cheddar.
