Sustainability in the wine industry has become a hot topic in recent years, as it should. At Edenvale, we believe every business has a part to play in becoming more environmentally responsible. To that end, we have invested $5M in building our own alcohol-removing facility to create a world-first, state-of-the-art operation. The major roll-out took place in June 2024, leading to innovative, alcohol-free, sustainable wine practices that help reduce our environmental impact. If you’re already familiar with Edenvale
non-alcoholic wines, then you understand how passionate our team is about remaining faithful to traditional wine varietals and winemaking techniques. We’re delighted to say that our environmental endeavours have actually enhanced our wines. That’s right - we’ve found a better solution for our planet and palate! So, if you also value sustainable wine solutions, please read on. Learn how we’re doing our bit to raise the bar and better protect the planet whilst continuing to make premium alcohol-removed wines.
What is Sustainable Wine?
We believe sustainable wines are crafted through eco-conscious practices. Our particular focus lies in energy efficiency and minimising waste. Since winemaking is typically energy-intensive, reducing our consumption was a priority. We also wanted to keep as much fruit as possible during the alcohol removal process. This way, we could reduce loss and better use primary resources.
GoLo - Our Answer to Non-Alcoholic Sustainable Wine
To
remove the alcohol from our wine, we relied on spinning cone technology. Not anymore. Edenvale has implemented GoLo technology, combined with an innovative, world-first heat-powered unit designed to remove alcohol in a more environmentally friendly way. Our new GoLo production facility delivers many advantages:
- Unlike traditional methods, our GoLo heats and cools wine in one process. This saves energy and reduces the heat shock to the wine.
- GoLo runs without requiring fossil fuels, which means we now produce significantly fewer carbon emissions.
- We require very little water during the entire process.
- GoLo loses half the wine that would typically be wasted using other alcohol-removal methods.
The Benefits of Sustainable Winemaking on Our Wines
Reducing the carbon footprint of our alcohol-removed wines was very important to us. However, the additional benefits make it a win for both the environment and our customers’ enjoyment. Not only does our new facility give our winemakers greater control over the wine-crafting process, but it has also enabled us to be more experimental and to fine-tune our processes. The result is even more complex vinosity (wine characteristics) across all our wines. Our team can now preserve delicate flavours using fewer steps, something most winemakers aspire to (we believe that less intervention is best when it comes to making great alcohol-removed wines).
Why Sustainable Wine Production Matters to Edenvale
Like all winemakers and primary producers, the Edenvale winemaking team is very in tune with the environment and its effects on climate change. Heat, fire, rain, hail, frost—Mother Nature sure can test this country at the best of times. We believe wine industry sustainability can help mitigate future environmental challenges. Rather than reacting to climate change, we want to be proactive and help prevent it from developing further. And when doing something for the greater good results in further improvements to the wine itself, we couldn’t be happier! Sustainability in wine is the future. Our new production plant is certainly our biggest single investment towards reducing our impact on the environment, but it is by no means the last. Stay tuned for more developments as we continue to share our efforts to raise the bar and better care for the planet.
